Saïd Business School’s Professor of Financial Economics, Ludovic Phalippou, has created what is believed to be the first cinematised educational case study. Responding to Gen Z and Millennial students’ demand for accessible and visual learning materials, this innovative approach marks a century after Harvard Business School introduced written case studies.
The film, “Redeveloping Hope,” follows Eric Clement, a former professional baseball player who pursued an Executive MBA at Oxford. The story centers on his work at New York’s Economic Development Corporation, transforming a juvenile prison into a modern industrial building and affordable apartments.
Co-written with professional screenwriters and acted by professionals, the movie highlights the challenges of impact investing and the necessity of mastering financial tools. Aimed at MBA and EMBA students, it covers key finance concepts like capital structure, debt claims, financial modelling, and valuation.
Ludovic Phalippou expressed pride in pioneering this cinematic approach and emphasized the importance of evolving educational methods to meet changing student needs. He hopes more such movies will be developed to better equip students with fundamental finance knowledge.
