Exploring Japan: A Cultural and Business Trek with Cambridge MBA Students

This year, a tradition continued for Cambridge MBA students—a business trek organized by Japanese classmates. The journey started in Osaka and ended in Tokyo, covering cultural landmarks and business insights along the way.

Osaka Adventures: The trek began with our arrival in Osaka, Japan’s bustling second city. Our first stop was Umeda, known for its vibrant markets and the iconic Osaka Castle, surrounded by cherry blossoms. The historical journey inside the castle offered panoramic city views. Culinary experiences included tasting Osaka’s famous Okonomiyaki and Kushikatsu under Tsutenkaku Tower.

Cultural Immersion in Kyoto: Next, we visited Kyoto, the heart of Japan’s cultural heritage. Staying in a traditional hotel, we explored a sake brewery, learning the detailed craft behind this Japanese staple and sampled various sakes. Landmarks like the Golden Pavilion, Kiyomizu-dera, and Fushimi Inari Taisha enriched our understanding of Japan’s historical and religious significance.

Business Insights in Tokyo: In Tokyo, we engaged with major corporations like Tokyu and Sony. A tour of Tokyu’s new omnichannel mall and insights into Sony’s innovation strategies highlighted the corporate aspect of our trek. Recreational visits included Harajuku, Shibuya, and an evening at Tokyo SkyTree.

Personal Discoveries: The journey concluded with personal time in Tokyo, where some indulged in shopping in Ginza and culinary adventures at Tsukiji fish market. A serene visit to an onsen in Shinjuku provided a tranquil finale to our busy schedule.

This trek not only exposed us to Japan’s dynamic business environment but also allowed us to immerse ourselves in its rich culture and historical sites. The experiences and lessons from this trip will resonate with us forever, fueling our desire to return.
