Making a Difference: EMBA Alumnus Riz Ahmed Brings Teachers to Classrooms Globally with EqualEd

Ahead of World Teachers’ Day, Riz Ahmed, an Executive MBA alumnus from Oxford Saïd, shares the story behind EqualEd, his social enterprise aimed at addressing global educational inequality. Moved by his experiences visiting schools in East Africa and India, Riz founded EqualEd to tackle the global teacher shortage, improve educational quality, and expand access.

EqualEd operates through three main initiatives:

  • Volunteachers: connecting subject experts to classrooms worldwide.
  • Teacher Training: providing development resources led by international experts.
  • Hub Development: establishing community-based, digitally connected learning centers.

Riz’s background as CFO at GEMS Education fueled his vision. With support from Oxford Saïd’s networks, EqualEd has reached schools in countries like Malawi, Pakistan, and Uganda. The initiative utilizes simple, accessible technology to bridge the teacher gap, allowing students in underserved areas to learn from global experts. Riz’s vision is to make EqualEd a leading charity in education, promoting equal learning opportunities and poverty alleviation through knowledge and skills development.
