Navigating a Top MBA Program as a First-Gen Professional

Yaritza Vallejo ’25, a first-generation student and brand marketing supervisor at McDonald’s, shares her journey in the Evening & Weekend MBA Program at Kellogg. Coming from a family of Mexican immigrants, Yaritza had to mature quickly, taking on responsibilities like translating for her parents and managing household tasks. Despite doubts from her school counselor, she pursued a four-year university education, driven by a strong sense of self-determination.

While Yaritza initially followed a conventional career path, landing offers from top firms, she realized her lack of passion and pivoted to brand marketing. This transition was challenging but ultimately led her to McDonald’s. Seeking further growth, she chose Kellogg for its top part-time MBA program, renowned reputation, and commitment to widening access to opportunities.

At Kellogg, Yaritza’s experience has been transformative, exposing her to new perspectives and opportunities. She gained a global perspective through a study abroad program in France, explored entrepreneurship in a supportive environment, and embraced the community, forming close friendships with like-minded peers.

Yaritza’s journey, marked by resilience and determination, demonstrates that no dream is too ambitious. She looks forward to embracing future challenges with the same tenacity that has brought her success.
