In celebration of National Coming Out Day and LGBTQ+ History Month, HBS students have shared their personal stories through the National Coming Out Day storyboard series. Here are some of their stories:
Yanzhan Wen (he/him), Class of 2025: Yanzhan talks about growing up in a socially conservative household and facing homophobic taunts at school. He shares how LGBTQ+ role models became a beacon of hope and strength for him. Yanzhan came out as gay when he relocated to Boston and is committed to using his voice and platform to empower the LGBTQ+ community.
Roch Desrousseaux (he/him), Class of 2025: Roch shares his journey of coming out at the age of 28 after trying to convince himself he wasn’t gay. He struggled with reconciling his sexuality and faith. Roch’s coming-out experience with his parents involved tears, questions, hugs, and ultimately, love. He offers support and understanding to those still in the closet, emphasizing that it’s okay to come out at your own pace.
Matt Wood (he/him), Class of 2024: Matt discusses how coming out as queer empowered him to take control of his personal and professional life. He grew up on the more eccentric and feminine side of certain social norms, and dance provided him with a language for otherness. He reflects on the importance of building community and showing up radically in the spaces he exists in. Matt’s family has been supportive of his journey, and he aims to make others feel the same support.
National Coming Out Day is a time for individuals to share their LGBTQ+ identities and stories, and it’s a reminder of the ongoing journey for many. These stories reflect the diversity of experiences and emotions within the LGBTQ+ community.
