Irene Korinetz, an MBA graduate from UBC Sauder School of Business, is making waves in the environmental solutions domain as a Senior Program Manager with TELUS’ Environmental Solutions team. Her role involves spearheading businesses that address environmental problems and work towards a sustainable planet. Since joining TELUS approximately 18 months ago, Korinetz, armed with a 2009 MBA, Project Management, and Change Management certifications, has played a pivotal role in investing in companies producing environmental benefits.
Korinetz’s passion for the environment guided her career choices. One of her notable projects was the acquisition of Alberta’s Shakti company, which focuses on tree planting, sourcing, and related technologies in Alberta and B.C.
Reflecting a growing demand for sustainable solutions, UBC Sauder recently introduced a specialized Climate Career Track for MBA students. This program educates aspiring leaders on climate impacts, mitigation strategies, and reporting. It encompasses courses on Climate Economics, Impact Investing, Indigenous Relations, and more, preparing students for leadership in sustainable business practices.
Korinetz attests to the value of her MBA, which not only doubled her salary but also equipped her with practical skills. A highlight from her educational journey was the richness of diverse perspectives from classmates of varied backgrounds, which enhanced collaborative experiences and team problem-solving.
Observing the changing landscape, Korinetz feels the urgency and attention towards climate change are now rightly placed, with increased investments and a rising number of entrepreneurs focusing on environmental solutions. She emphasizes the crucial role younger generations play, lauding their technological proficiency and commitment to environmental solutions. In her view, it’s these young professionals who will drive the significant change the world needs.
