Louis Attilio Fierro, a student of the Daytime MBA class of 2024 at the Fuqua School of Business, discusses the value of an MBA degree in terms of the meaningful leadership opportunities it offers. Fuqua’s rigorous curriculum, club participation, and recruiting process demand a high degree of decency quotient (DQ), intelligence quotient (IQ), and emotional quotient (EQ) from its students, while also providing them the autonomy to make impactful changes on campus.
One instance of such leadership opportunity came via a highly engaged Fuqua alumnus, Demetrio Carceller Arce, President of Damm Brewery, the largest brewery in Spain. Arce, also a member of the Board of Visitors, planned to launch a joint internship and mentored study experience exclusively for Fuqua students. The program, starting in the summer of 2023, would allow students to design their own internship focusing on transformational leadership and work for one of Arce’s many businesses in Barcelona.
Although Fierro didn’t ultimately intern at Damm, he became involved in shaping the new program based on his experience as a Fuquan. With the support of the deans and feedback from classmates, he contributed to refining the internship structure and recruitment process. Eventually, three students from a strong pool of candidates were selected for the inaugural program.
Fierro’s experience illustrates how Fuqua’s community ethos fosters leadership development and allows students to create unique opportunities. He highlights the key role of the alumni network in giving back to the community, allowing students to enhance their leadership skills, develop their voices, and leave the community better than when they found it.
